Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery

After completing this course, the student will be able to:

  • Discuss the principles of wound healing

  • Describe the steps involved in the extraction of erupted teeth (including instrument selection, flap design, osteotomy and tooth sectioning)

  • Recognize conditions requiring a biopsy and describe biopsy techniques

  • List and describe the surgical techniques for preprosthetic surgery

  • Assess patients with the following conditions and discuss their surgical management

    • Impacted teeth

      • Pathosis of the head and neck (especially odontogenic cysts and tumors)

        • Dental and dentoalveolar trauma

          • Soft tissue injuries

            • Fractures of the jaw and mid-face

              • Facial skeletal deformities

  • Achieve surgical asepsis

  • Anesthetize a patient for dentoalveolar surgery

  • Refer patients requiring consultation with an Oral Surgeon
