Oral and Maxillofacial Pathology

Students will study congenital and acquired disorders that impact the development of the oral cavity and facial structures. Topics may include cleft lip and palate, ankyloglossia, and ectodermal dysplasia.

Developmental Abnormalities

Students will study different types of tumors that originate from the dental tissues, including benign and malignant growths. Emphasis will be placed on recognizing radiographic and histologic features for accurate diagnosis.

Odontogenic Tumors

This topic explores various conditions affecting the salivary glands, such as Sjögren's syndrome, stones, and infections. Students will learn about the role of saliva in oral health and how these disorders can impact overall well-being.

Salivary Gland Disorders

Students will gain an understanding of the different TMJ disorders, including arthritis, disc displacement, and myofascial pain. Treatment options, including splint therapy and surgery, will be discussed.

Temporomandibular Joint Disorders

This topic covers how systemic conditions such as diabetes, HIV/AIDS, and autoimmune diseases can present with oral signs and symptoms. Students will learn how to recognize these manifestations and collaborate with other healthcare providers for comprehensive patient care.

Oral Manifestations of Systemic Diseases

This topic focuses on identifying oral lesions that have the potential to progress into oral cancer. Students will learn about risk factors, diagnostic techniques, and the importance of early detection and intervention.

Oral Precancerous Lesions

Students will explore common infections of the oral mucosa, teeth, and surrounding tissues, such as herpes simplex, candidiasis, and periodontal diseases. The course will cover preventive measures and treatment modalities for these conditions.

Infectious Diseases of the Oral Cavity

This topic introduces students to the principles of radiographic imaging for diagnosing oral and maxillofacial pathology. Emphasis will be placed on recognizing normal anatomy, pathological findings, and artifacts on radiographs.
